"Wine is the drink of the gods, milk the drink of babies, tea the drink of women, and water the drink of beasts." - John Stuart Blackie

In magnum format to fit Jimmy's stature, this fabulous wine is aptly named "Jimmy" to commemorate this beloved, larger-than-life man and his legacy, the Jimmy Mancbach Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Renowned winemaker, Tony Soter made this 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet-based proprietary red wine for Jimmy. Also incorporated in the Bordeaux blend are important contributions from Malbec and Merlot. The wine is beautiful, comments Tony, with a lovely fragrance of cassis and wild berries spiced with a note of cinnamon toast from the oak. The texture is immediately lush and generous with no tannins getting in the way of enjoyment. The inky-colored wine is amazingly rich, complex, elegant and mouthfilling. It has the means to age well for years to come, especially as it is all bottled in magnums.
Tony Soter has had a great influence on California winemaking. Ever since coming to the Napa Valley in 1975, he has been fascinated with the process of grape growing and winemaking. His first significant impact was as winemaker at Spottswoode in the 1980s, followed by stints at Araujo, Niebaum-Coppola, Dalla Valle, Shafer, Viader and Moraga. Tony made some of Napa Valley's classiest wines and became one of the region's most successful consulting winemakers.
Tony founded Etude Wines in 1982 and its name, "study," describes his reverence for the ongoing learning process that is winegrowing. Early in his career, he realized that there were innumerable variables that guided a wine towards excellence. He learned to distinguish between winemaking techniques fundamental to quality, and those that imparted a winemaker's signature. He sought to understand the voice of each individual vineyard, to maximize its expression in the glass.
By 1997, Tony owned a 45-acre parcel in Oregon's Willamette Valley, making his first Oregon Pinot Noir in 1998. In 1999, he quit the consulting business to devote more time to family, Etude and Oregon. Etude has become one of Napa Valley's most prestigious brands, with polished Pinot Noirs and rich, complex Cabernets. In 2001, Tony sold Etude to Beringer Blass, staying on as winemaker. Today Tony remains the guiding hand behind Etude Wines, but eventually he will transition to a consulting role, and concentrate on Soter Vineyards. At its core, Soter Vineyards is the culmination of many years of study and preparation. He brings to Soter Vineyards the experience of over 30 harvests, the erudition and attention to detail reflected in countless wines, and most importantly, the desire to make great wines from very specific places on his own terms. Apart from being a culmination, Soter Vineyards is also a beginning. It is a family enterprise; with the eventual help of their children, Oregon natives Tony and his wife Michelle hope to establish a legacy of august, estate-bottled wines, in the fashion of the great family domaines of Burgundy.
